There is something about helping plan your best friend’s engagement that lives in a category all its own. The excitement, the nerves, the weight of getting it exactly right – it’s a rush unlike anything else. Shannon had no expectations, which gave Johnny and I the freedom to follow our instincts. And so we did.
Verona Columns Park sits quietly in Mission Hills, one of Kansas City’s most beautiful neighborhoods. Featuring stunning architectural homes and lush gardens that feel almost tucked away from the rest of the city. The moment I found it, I knew. This was where their story was supposed to begin.
The logistics took some coordinating. Everyone parked offsite to avoid raising suspicion. A few of our friends convinced Shannon to dress up for what she thought was a girls’ picnic at the park. Her family and friends slipped behind the perfectly trimmed hedges, hidden and waiting. And Johnny stood at the top of the steps, ready.
The moment Shannon stepped into the park and spotted him in the distance, she knew. The tears came before she even reached him.
What followed was one of those moments that unfolds like it was always meant to. Everyone emerged from behind the bushes in a quiet, seamless half-circle around the fountain, and as she said “Yes”, he placed her dream ring on her finger carefully.
The rest of the evening was pure celebration: ring shots, engagement portraits, and then everyone together for a family-style dinner and wine at Maggiano’s.
Being trusted to help dream this up and then document it – while staying fully present for the moment itself, thanks to my second shooter – was one of the greatest honors. Some days, this job is just extraordinary.
